International Community School Al Mushrif (1990)

International Community School is a private K-12 school located in Abu Dhabi. The school was first established in 1990 and caters to over 1500 students almost exclusively of Arab origin, including Egyptian, Jordanian, Palestinian, Syrian and Emirati citizens, and a mixture of Canadian, American, Filipino and Asian nationalities. The school is licensed as an American curriculum school, with a four-year concession to continue with a British curriculum which has been offered at the school for many years. According to a recent ADEC (Abu Dhabi Educational Council) report, results in English and mathematics in IGCSE, AS and A2 examinations are very high and exceptionally high in science. The proportion of students gaining the top grades “far exceeds international averages. Students following the American program exceed UAE norms by a wide margin and are broadly average compared with international benchmarks”. In Arabic, Islamic and Social Studies, standards are also above average, reflecting good teaching in those subjects. Subjects offered through the school include English, English Social Studies, Arabic, Arabic Social Studies, Islamic Studies, Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), Mathematics, French, Computing, Business Studies, Accounting, Sociology, Art, Music, and Physical Education. “IGCSE, AS and A2 courses and the American program offer sufficient breadth and diversity in the upper grades. In addition, life skills, music, physical education, accounting, art, French and sociology add further variety.” Resources at the school are of the highest standard: interactive boards are in every teaching room from K-12, in addition to computers to be used by the teachers and students. Facilities at the school include two well-stocked libraries (senior and junior) equipped with computers for online research. There is an examination hall with a capacity for 80 students, seated according to the international examination standards. The school boasts three computer laboratories and a Technology room, an ECO Club room (focus of the school’s sustainability efforts), Student Life room (home to the Student Council and school Prefect body), Physics, Chemistry and Biology labs, in addition to a General Science lab for the lower grades. The gymnasium is built to international standards and is fully equipped for sports such as basketball, volleyball and badminton, in addition to an artificially-grassed outdoor soccer field on the school’s rooftop, and a 50-metre six-lane indoor swimming pool complete the sports facilities. Students also enjoy access to a music room, an art room, a seated cafeteria offering hot and cold meals, and a medical clinic staffed by two full-time nurses and a bi-weekly doctor’s visit. Its position in the center of Abu Dhabi Island attracts students from all over the city. Extra-curricular activities offered at ICS from time-to-time include: art, drama, science club, basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, cooking, folk dancing, computer, internet, music, Quran recitation, needlework, board games, flower arrangement, handwriting, journalism, aerobics, French club, first aid course and karate / taekwondo.
